Year 3 Summer Overview

In Year 3, we’re stepping into our final term of the year with a fantastic line-up of new topics, hands-on experiences, and exciting learning opportunities! Here’s what we’re getting up to this term:

English – Lob by Linda NewberyLob

This term, we’re reading the beautifully written story Lob, which tells the tale of a mysterious green man who seems to appear when he’s needed most. We launched our topic with a special surprise—each child received a personal letter from one of the characters, delivered by the postman right to our classroom!

Through this rich and atmospheric text, the children will explore key reading and writing skills including:

Inference – understanding what characters are thinking and feeling.
Expanding vocabulary through context clues and imagery.
Writing in role – diary entries, letters, and narrative from a character’s point of view.

The children will also develop their own descriptive and reflective writing, drawing on the story’s themes of change, loss, and the power of belief.

History – The Romans

We’ve begun our new topic on the Romans and have already been amazed by the Roman models some children have brought in from home—thank you! This term, we’ll be exploring how the Roman Empire grew, what life was like for a Roman soldier, and how the Romans changed Britain forever.

Pupils will:
Learn about Roman roads, baths, and buildings.
Investigate the Roman army and their key battles.
Understand the legacy of Roman inventions and governance.

We’re excited to bring history to life with creative tasks, artefact handling, and opportunities to become Roman experts!

Science – Biodiversity and Habitats

In Science, we are learning about the rich variety of life on Earth and why it’s important to protect it. Pupils will explore:

Different types of habitats and the animals that live in them.
Why biodiversity matters and how humans can help protect it.
How to group and classify animals based on features.

This topic will encourage children to become curious, respectful learners who care for the natural world around them.

  Maths – Time and Beyond

This term, we’re focusing on telling the time, including reading both analogue and digital clocks, and using terms like ‘past’ and ‘to’. Pupils will also:

Solve real-life problems involving time durations.
Later in the term, revisit key skills in shape, statistics, and consolidation of multiplication and division facts.

We’ll continue using hands-on tools and engaging investigations to make learning practical and purposeful.
