Welcome to the Year 1 page!
Here, you'll find everything you need to stay connected with our Year 1 journey. We'll keep this page updated with important announcements, homework assignments, curriculum highlights, trip information, and snapshots of what we're learning in class.
Check back regularly to see what’s new, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. We’re excited for a fantastic year ahead!
English: The Tiger Who came to tea
This term, the children will be engaging in exciting activities to develop their storytelling and writing skills. One of the highlights will be retelling a familiar story but with a twist – creating a brand-new ending to entertain their Year 1 peers. This imaginative exercise encourages creativity and builds confidence in storytelling. Additionally, they will be learning how to write a shopping list and detailed recipe instructions for a tea party. With a focus on clear and informative writing, this activity will help children understand how to communicate instructions effectively, preparing them to inform an adult audience. These tasks combine fun and learning, fostering key literacy skills and creativity. We can’t wait to see their wonderful ideas!
BUGCLUB: Bug Club is a fun online platform to support your child’s reading. Use the login details from your child’s teacher to access books and activities matched to their reading level. Reading regularly at home will help them grow in confidence and skill. Thank you for supporting their learning!
Maths:
This term, we are building on the children’s previous learning of numbers to 10 by extending their counting skills to 20. To help them master this, we provide regular opportunities for verbal counting, such as counting classmates or objects in activities.
The teen numbers can be tricky for children as the names don’t follow the same clear pattern as higher numbers. To support their understanding, we use hands-on resources to show the “10-and-a-bit” structure of these numbers. Activities like using number tracks to count forwards and backwards, as well as fun “I count, you count” games, help children practise starting their counting from different points.
We encourage you to practise counting to 20 at home to reinforce their learning.
Geography: Weather Patterns in the UK
Children will explore the fascinating world of weather by observing and recording daily and seasonal patterns across the UK. They will learn to identify key elements such as:
- Temperature: Noticing changes in warmth and coolness throughout the seasons.
- Rainfall: Measuring and understanding how rainfall varies during the year.
- Sunlight: Observing changes in daylight hours and how this impacts daily life.
- Wind: Identifying windy days and understanding their effects on the environment.
Using simple weather charts and calendars, children will track patterns and begin to understand how weather influences what we wear, what we do, and how it shapes the environment around us.
DT: Chop, Slice, and Mash
This hands-on food project is all about discovering the journey of food from source to plate. Children will:
- Learn about where food comes from, including farms, gardens, and supermarkets.
- Practice essential food preparation skills, including peeling, tearing, slicing, chopping, mashing, and grating.
- Develop their design skills by creating their very own supermarket sandwich, using specific design criteria such as taste, texture, and presentation.
This activity encourages healthy eating habits, creativity, and an appreciation for food preparation.
Science: Animals, Including Humans
In this science unit, children will dive into the animal kingdom and learn about:
- Animal Classification: Identifying common animals and grouping them as carnivores, herbivores, or omnivores based on their diets.
- Animal Structures: Comparing features like fur, feathers, scales, and different body parts across various species.
- The Human Body: Naming and understanding the functions of key body parts and sensory organs such as eyes, ears, and nose.
Children will also explore animal behaviours and learn about the importance of caring for animals in their local environment, fostering a sense of responsibility and respect for nature.
Re: Symbols
Children will be introduced to key symbols and practices from major world religions, including Christianity, Sikhism, and Buddhism. This topic promotes understanding and respect for diversity by exploring:
- The significance of religious symbols.

This unit encourages curiosity and cultural awareness while celebrating differences.
