Welcome to the Year 1 page!
Here, you'll find everything you need to stay connected with our Year 1 journey. We'll keep this page updated with important announcements, homework assignments, curriculum highlights, trip information, and snapshots of what we're learning in class.
Check back regularly to see what’s new, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions. We’re excited for a fantastic year ahead!
English: The Three Little Pigs
This term, the children will be exploring the story of The Three Little Pigs through fun activities that develop their storytelling and writing skills. They will begin by retelling the familiar tale, practising how to sequence events and use clear sentences. Later, the children will use their imagination to create a brand-new version of the story, giving it an exciting twist ending to surprise their Year 1 friends. These activities will encourage creativity, build confidence in storytelling, and help develop key writing skills. We can’t wait to see their fantastic ideas!
BUG CLUB: Bug Club is a fun online platform to support your child’s reading. Use the login details from your child’s teacher to access books and activities matched to their reading level. Reading regularly at home will help them grow in confidence and skill. Thank you for supporting their learning!
Maths:
In Maths this term, the children will be building their understanding of numbers through fun and practical activities. They will begin with early maths skills such as sorting and counting objects, before moving on to place value. The children will also be using number tracks and learning how to compare numbers up to 20. These activities will help them develop confidence with numbers and build a strong foundation for future learning.
We encourage you to practise counting to 20 at home to reinforce their learning.
History: Childhood
In History this term, the children will be exploring the topic of childhood in the past. They will look closely at toys, houses, and clothes to compare what life was like then and now. As history detectives, the children will ask and answer questions to help them understand how childhood has changed over time.
DT: Textiles
In DT this term, the children will be learning how to join fabrics together using pins, staples, or glue. They will design their own puppet (three little pigs!) and use a template to help with the shape. The children will then join the two sides of their puppet’s face and decorate it carefully to match their design. This will help them develop practical skills as well as creativity.
Science: Materials
In Science this term, the children will be learning all about materials. They will explore different everyday materials such as wood, plastic, metal, fabric, and glass. The children will investigate the properties of these materials, such as whether they are hard or soft, bendy or stiff, and think about why they are used for certain objects. Through hands-on activities and investigations, they will develop their skills in asking questions, making observations, and explaining their ideas.
RE
This term in RE, the children will be exploring the question: What is real? They will learn about what different religions and beliefs say is real, like God, angels, or other spiritual ideas. The children will also think about their own ideas and share what they believe, helping them understand their own thoughts and the ideas of others.
PSHE
This term in PSHE, the children will be learning about feelings. They will explore different emotions, how to recognise them, and how to talk about them. The children will also think about ways to manage their feelings and how to be kind and supportive friends.
ICT: Technology
In ICT, the children will be finding out what technology is and how it helps us in everyday life. They will look at examples of technology at school and at home, and begin to understand how we can use it safely and sensibly.
Thank you for your support!
