Year 4 Autumn Overview

We’ve had a fantastic start to Year 4, beginning the term with an unforgettable kayaking trip at the Pirate Castle in Camden! This adventure launched our new Geography topic on rivers and the water cycle, giving us first-hand experience of how important rivers are in our world. Here’s what we’re learning this term:

English – Into the Forest by Anthony Browne

This term, we’re diving into Into the Forest, a beautifully illustrated story that hides clues to many well-known traditional tales. The children loved spotting the hidden details in the pictures and are now working on retelling the story in their own words.

Through this engaging text, the children will develop their reading and writing skills by:

  • Creating story maps to plan and organise their ideas.

  • Retelling the story from different perspectives.

  • Editing and publishing their own finished pieces.

This will help them become more confident, independent writers who take pride in their work.

Maths – Place Value

In Maths, we’re focusing on deepening our understanding of place value. Using hands-on resources such as dienes, counters, and place value charts, the children will:

  • Recognise the value of each digit in a number.

  • Partition and compare numbers.

  • Practise ordering and rounding numbers with increasing confidence.

These practical approaches make abstract concepts much clearer and lay strong foundations for the year ahead.

Geography – Rivers and the Water Cycle
Our kayaking trip has inspired our new Geography topic, where we’ll be exploring how rivers shape the land and why water is such an essential resource. Pupils will:

  • Learn about the different parts of a river and how they flow.

  • Investigate the journey of water through the water cycle.

  • Understand the importance of rivers in everyday life.

This topic will encourage children to see the links between nature, human activity, and sustainability.

Science – States of Matter
In Science, we’re exploring states of matter and learning how materials can change between solids, liquids, and gases. The children will:

  • Compare and group materials based on their state.

  • Investigate how temperature affects changes of state.

  • Discover the role of evaporation and condensation in the water cycle.

Through experiments and observations, pupils will develop their scientific skills and curiosity.

R.E. – Abrahamic Faiths
This term, we’re exploring the question “Who is God?” across the Abrahamic faiths. Pupils will learn about the beliefs of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, comparing how each faith understands God and how this shapes the lives of their followers. This will help children develop respect, understanding, and curiosity about different worldviews.
