Autumn 2

In Year 4, our Autumn 2 term will be packed with exciting subjects and activities! Here’s what we’ll be focusing on across different topics:

History: Anglo Saxons

The Anglo-Saxons were people who lived in England over 1,000 years ago, from around the years 400 to 1066. They came from parts of Northern Europe, especially places we now call Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. These people sailed across the sea to England after the Romans left and made it their home.

The Anglo-Saxons lived in small villages with houses made from wood and straw. They were farmers, growing crops and raising animals, and they loved storytelling and crafts like jewelry making. They were also known for their brave warriors and had many exciting battles.

One of the most famous Anglo-Saxon kings was King Alfred the Great, who helped defend England from Viking invasions and made many improvements to his kingdom. The Anglo-Saxons also believed in many gods, but over time, they became Christians and built churches.

Their time ended in 1066 when they were conquered by the Normans in the Battle of Hastings, but their influence can still be seen in England today, especially in place names and some English words.

English: The Ice Palace

"Starjik! Whisper his name and it was winter in your heart."

It's winter again and Starjik and his wolves start coming into Ivan's village every night, but when everyone wakes up in the morning, a child is always missing. One sad day, it's Ivan's beloved brother who has disappeared, and Ivan decides to go to Starjik's cavern and save his brother, but danger lies ahead...

Our English work will focus on two major projects:

  • A Diary EntryWrite a diary entry from Ivan's perspective during his journey to the ice palace, reflecting on his thoughts and feelings about the adventure.
  • Dialogue Writing

Science: Sound

This term, Year 4 are going to explore how sounds are made, how they travel, and what affects their pitch and volume. Students will begin by investigating how sounds are produced by vibrations, using objects like drums and tuning forks to see and feel the vibrations that create sound. They will then learn that sounds travel through different materials—such as air, water, and solids—to reach our ears. Experiments with string telephones will help students observe how sound moves differently through air and solids.

To understand pitch, students will experiment with elastic bands or water-filled bottles to see how changes in thickness or length alter the pitch. For volume, they will explore how striking objects with different levels of force change the strength of vibrations and the loudness of the sound.

Students will also discover how sound fades with distance and investigate which materials block sound best by making simple earmuffs from cotton or foam. Finally, they will design and build basic instruments, like rubber band guitars, to apply their understanding of pitch and volume, recording how changes in instrument design impact sound. Through hands-on activities, they will gain a clear understanding of how sound works and how it can be controlled.

Maths: Area and Multiplication and Division

Our Maths lessons will be focused on two big topics: Area and Multiplication and Division.

  • Area: Students will be introduced to Area for the first time and will measure area by counting the number of squares a shape takes up.
  • Multiplication and Division: We will be focusing on different timetables and looking at the relationship between multiplication and division and writing different fact families.
